11 things that make photographers cringe.

If you’ve been into photography long enough I’m sure you know that there are some crazy, annoying, and just down right rude things that people say or assume about us. I’m going to list them here for you. If you’re a photographer reading this, maybe you can relate. If you’re not a photographer, just keep these things in mind next time you get your photos done.

#1. “I’m looking for a good photographer that is cheap”

Okay, first of all, if they are a good photographer, more than likely “cheap” is not what they would be. Of course, it depends on each person’s definition of cheap. A millionaire could think $5000 was cheap. BUT, if we’re being honest with ourselves, more than likely if someone is asking for a “cheap” photographer, they aren’t a millionaire. It’s offensive to us photographers because you’re basically saying, that our work is not worth paying money for. I’ll write a future post as to where a photographer’s prices come from.

#2. “Hey I’m friends with “insert family member name” Can I get a discount?”

Ugh.

#3. “Can you make me look good in photoshop?”

Well, I will try my best. The key is to show up looking YOUR best.

#4. “How much would you charge if you just took the photos and I did the editing?”

First of all. No. Second of all. No. and third. Hell no. There may be others who feel differently about this but there is no way I would give over my unedited photos, and let someone completely destroy them with Instagram filters and then say I did it. No way. Part of my artistic vision are my edits. I love editing my photos, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Now I don’t go as far as making things look fake or unrealistic. But I like to create the image the way I saw it in my mind. This question is basically the person admitting that they are just using you for your camera and are not actually interested in your work. I’d just tell them, if they want to edit their own images, they can set up a tripod and take their own images.

#5. “Can I have all the unedited raw files?”

Again. NO. If you didn’t want me for my work, then I don’t want you as a client. I’m not just in this for the money. I love what I do, and I want to share it with the world. I don’t want to be used because someone thinks my camera does all the work and they can just edit the photos themselves. Again see response from #4

#6  “I’m inviting you to my event, can you bring your camera?”

Sure, can you bring the money.

#7. “your job is so easy, all you do is click a button all day”

I’d like to see you pull it off.

#8. “Your camera takes good pictures”

How often we hear this. You talk to someone and they say “Your camera takes good pictures” well the best response to that is “Thank you I taught it everything it knows.” Because in most cases this is true for a professional photographer. The Camera is just a tool that we use to create great images. We have to set the camera just right so we get great exposure. We set up the composition. We sometimes do crazy things to get the perfect angle. And we create the “good” image you claim that the camera takes. What if you cooked a friend dinner one time, you slaved over a hot stove for a few hours and cooked something from scratch and put all the ingredients in it and served it to me, and I take a bite and say “Oh wow your stove cooks great meals” I’m pretty sure you’d be insulted.

#9. You edit my photos and then post them on facebook.

If you’re going to do this, please don’t tag me, mention me or even acknowledge me as the photographer. Big slap in the face.

#10. “Can you take your watermark off so I can print them from facebook?”

Nope. But you can pay me and I’ll print them for you.

#11. “I can get these cheaper at Walmart”

Yep, you get what you pay for
